I got a chance to ask this up and coming San Francisco about their summer plans, their influences, Italian backgrounds and unique rock sound…
Pietro, the bands guitar player was cool enough to answer a few questions via e-mail. Take a look~
- You describe your style of creating music as an intriguing process that is producing good and enjoyable music, what is the fascinating aspects?
(Pietro)
I like the fact that there is no consciousness involved in creating a song. It is completely unpredictable. You never know what you will come up with until you start playing. Then you look back and re-listen and realize that is your song. Most of the time your emotions and feelings of the moment are imbedded in it weather you like it or not. It’s a beautiful form of expression. The challenge is to create something not easily perishable. Music that you can feel proud of for years to come.
- What does it mean to have an Italian background to each band member, if anything? Does it create a certain sound, ect.?
(Pietro)
Just two of us, Paolo and myself actually grew up in Italy. Bruno and Tina are second and third generation Italians.
We never really liked most of the local music while living there. That was actually one of the main reasons we decided to move to the US.
We always felt much closer to American and British music. I'm sure however that the fact of living in a country so different from this one influences our thinking and therefore the music.
- Does the mix of guys and girls change anything? With Tina, do you feel that your expected to behave differently? How do you all get along?
(Pietro)
As Bruno once put it "Tina was the man for the job".
We tried over 30 drummers when starting the band and Tina was the best one. We didn't think of her gender when we decided to work together.
That has never been an issue for us. I'm sure there is a different dynamic in the band compared to if we were all guys, but there is always a lot of respect for one another.
- What is your band name about and/or come from?
(Pietro)
It may sound superficial but we wanted a one name word that hadn't been taken by an artist in the last 50 years of music. A neutral word that people can eventually and un-mistakenly associate only to us.
The meaning can be found on any dictionary but pretty much the Apsides are: Points of an orbit furthest and closest to it’s center of attraction.
- Now that Apside is looking for a replacement bass player for the summer, have you had any luck? What are you looking for exactly? (off the record, I play bass) cough, cough
(Pietro)
We haven't really posted any adds or anything but if anyone comes up in this period we can definitely get together. Cough. Cough.....
- I know there’s plans to tour this summer, any changes/ additions made lately?
(Pietro)
We are actually concentrating on finishing and arranging a lot of songs that we want to include in our first official release. We'd like to have a full length album buy the end of this year.
- Anything you’d like to add?
(Pietro)
-Desire, a Fox network TV show has just picked up one of our songs "Someday" for one of the episodes. Starts airing on September 8th.
-We are now being played on Humans show at Alice 97.3 that airs every Saturday night starting at 8.
-In September Apside will play a live session on live 105's "sound check" with Aaron Axelson.
- O.K. here’s the fun part were going to play a word game. I say a word and you say the first thing that pops into your head, alright ready go!
